I had a vision to take those old sequin bags that we use to carry to the mall (back in the early 2000’s), stuffed with a digital camera, body spray and a pack of cigarettes we weren’t suppose to be have.. to another level! I found a couple never used or gently used, thrifted ones and made them Sweetgrass!! I wanted new handles with draping dramatic leather fringe off the sides! I started by removing the existing handles/strap and replacing it with my hardware and a new leather strap, hand laced made from a beautiful cognac color working horse leather. After I cut the straps out of the hide, I used the remaining hide and hand cut the fringe from end to end! It really did take an entire hide to get the fringe for both of the sequin bags and lots and lots of cutting with scissors. My hands were toast!! Once the cutting was complete, I then trimmed the ends of the fringe, piece by piece and laced them through the edge of the sequin bag one by one! Each fringe is hand knotted to the bag and measures 24”-26” long!
And that is how I turned a plain y2k sequin bag into a design for the time, Sweetgrass revamp! A true show stopper with all its sparkling texture and dramatic draping fringe! She’ll for sure turn heads!
